Campaign Story

My name is Hephzibah. My husband and I have been married for almost 14 years and have no children together. I had a tubal ligation when I was 21 because I had complications during pregnancy in a prior relationship. I was scared and made the decision uninformed. I have longed to give children to my husband, but am not one of the ‘fortunate’ ones who was able to conceive after a tubal ligation.

Three years ago we decided to pursue IVF, but coming up with the large sum most clinics want before treatment has proven to be difficult .

About four years ago, my youngest sister was diagnosed with breast cancer. My mother a few years before that had been tested for the BRCA gene mutation. With this information I had myself tested. I have the BRCA 1 gene mutation. I wasn’t as informed then as I am now. I recently found out that I should have my ovaries removed to prevent ovarian cancer. There is no screening for this, just blood work and ultrasound to hopefully catch something in the early stages. With this new information, I knew I needed to act fast. Now more than ever, I feel like time is slipping away from me. This is something I had dreamed of since we first got married, and I may never get to see it happen because of ovarian cancer. I know I can’t wait forever and take my time. We need this to happen soon so I can take care of myself.
